Italian Hours / Henry James. - Oxford : John Beaufoy Publishing, 2009. - V, 306 stron ; 20 cm.
Henry James was a renowned observer of European culture, in both his fiction and in his life. In particular, he loved Italy, visiting it 14 times during his lifetime and setting several of his novels in the country. Between 1873 and 1909, he also wrote numerous essays and travelogues that were ultimately collected into one volume and published as Italian Hours. James is famous for his fine perception and baroque prose and both are found in abundance in Italian Hours. As one would expect, he is a wonderful cultural critic, providing passionate and discerning reviews of the highlights of Italy's art and architecture. He also presents a surprisingly familiar view of the changes that time and tourism were bringing to modern Italy. For all of his acute insights, Italian Hours is, above all, an affair of the heart and will resonate with anyone who shares his love of the country. Stanfords Travel Classics feature some of the finest historical travel writing in the English language, with authors hailing from both sides of the Atlantic. Every title has been rest in a contemporary typeface and has been printed to a high quality production specification, to create a series that every lover of fine travel literature will want to collect and keep.

Travels in the Interior of Africa / Mungo Park. - Wydanie 2. - Oxford : John Beaufoy Publishing, 2009. - IV, 222 strony ; 20 cm.
Mungo Parkĺs Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa has long been regarded as a classic of African travel literature. In fulfilling his mission to find the Niger River and in documenting its potential as an inland waterway for trade, Park was significant in opening Africa to European economic interests. His modest, low-key heroism made it possible for the British public to imagine themselves as a welcomed force in Africa. As a tale of adventure and survival, it has inspired the imaginations of readers since its first publication in 1799 and writers from Wordsworth and Melville to Conrad, Hemingway, and T. Coreghessan Boyle have acknowledged the influence of Parkĺs narrative on their work. Unlike the large expeditions that followed him, Park traveled only with native guides or alone. Without much of an idea of where he was going, he relied entirely on local people for food, shelter, and directions throughout his eventful eighteen month journey. While his warm reaction to the people he met made him famous as a sentimental traveler, his chronicle also provides a rare written record of the lives of ordinary people in West Africa before European intervention. His accounts of war, politics, and the spread of Islam, as well as his constant confrontations with slavery as practiced in eighteenth-century West Africa, are as valuable today as they were in 1799.

Ernest Shackleton sailed to the South Pole as the First World War broke out in Europe, intent on making the first ever trans-Antarctic crossing. South ! is Shackletonĺs first-hand account of the epic expedition, which he described as Ĺthe last great journey on earthĺ. During the journey their ship, the Endurance, became trapped by ice and was crushed, forcing the men to survive in and escape from one of the worldĺs most hostile environments. With no hope of resuce, Shackleton and four others set sail in a small open boat on a 600-mile crossing to South Georgia. Shipwrecked on the uninhabited side of the island, they were forced into making the first ever winter crossing of the island, all the time threatened by brutal cold and hunger. South ! made Shackletonĺs name as an explorer. The dramatic story, one of the most astonishing feats of Polar escapology, remains as enthralling as when it was first published in 1919.

An Inland Voyage / Robert Louis Stevenson. - Wyd. 2. - Oxford : John Beaufoy Publishing, 2011. - VIII, 118 s. : il., mapa ; 20 cm.
Robert Louis Stevenson was not only a gifted writer, he was also an indefatigable traveller. His thirst for adventure was formed by his boyhood visits to remote Scottish lighthouses, and he spent much of his life fleeing the rigours of cold climes and social orthodoxy. Along the way he travelled through the Cevennes with a donkey, booked passage to and across America, and finally famously settled in Samoa in the South Pacific. The canoing trip through Belgium and northern France that Stevenson describes in An Inland Voyage was taken in 1876, when the author was 26 years old. Stevenson and his companion, Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, each had a ôkayakö-style wooden canoe, with a deck and rigged with a sail. Starting in Belgium and then travelling downriver in France from Maubeuge (near Mons) to Pontoise on the outskirts of Paris, the book paints a charming picture of western Europe at a more innocent time.

The Innocrnts Abroad / Mark Twain. - Oxford : John Beaufoy Publishing, 2011. - VII, 499 stron ; 20 cm.
(Stanfords Travel Classics)
Mark Twain wrote a series of travel letters whilst on a tour of Europe and the Middle East in 1867 with a group of American ôpilgrimsö. These letters later formed the basis of The Innocents Abroad. Journeying from New York to Egypt via France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Russia, Turkey and the Holy Land, he observed and lampooned his companions with typically caustic and incisive commentary. The local people he encountered fared little better. In frequently humorous, sometimes grotesque detail, Twain records the day-to-day ups and downs of discovering the truth about people and places, while pillorying those tourists who rely on guidebooks rather than their own impressions to define their experiences. Endlessly comic and entertaining, The Innocents Abroad remains one of the most celebrated travel books ever written about Europe and the Middle East by an American.
